AI Agents — The Foot-soldiers for Agentic Browser

This topic has been trending for the last six months and rightly so. Instead of explaining it, I recommend some must-read articles that explain the technology behind them.

Chain-of-thought Traces

In this example, Comet was asked to identify important connections among the pending LinkedIn requests and to accept all of them.

On clicking the “Steps” tab, the backend, summarized thinking steps are mentioned. These chain-of-thought traces allow the user to determine whether it was the expected behavior and rewrite the query whenever required.

Reliable Controls — The Right Amount of Balance & Transparency

Although you may feel that everything is done autonomously and fear that things are not in control. It is not the case.

For example, in the YouTube video below, Comet was asked to locate a specific tweet and quote-tweet it. But before posting it, it showed both its intermediate steps and also asked for permission from the user before posting it.

Even when it was posted, it added the following phrase by default: “Created with Comet Assistant”. This definitely adds to the transparency of Agentic behavior.

The OpenAI Controversy

According to a Reuters article, OpenAI has stated that they are planning to release an AI-enabled browser to challenge Google Chrome. This news comes just after the release of the Comet browser by Perplexity.

The controversy arises regarding the truthfulness of the claim.

In recent interviews, Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity, shared some fascinating insights about Comet’s vision and development:

“We built Comet to be a thought partner and assistant for every aspect of your digital life. It’s not just a browser — it’s an agentic platform that understands context and helps you get things done.”

He emphasized that Comet is designed for today’s internet reality, where people don’t just browse — they work, research, and live online. The AI assistant’s ability to maintain continuity across sessions enables multi-step research and complex workflows without the usual frustration of losing track or drowning in tabs.

Srinivas also revealed that powering Comet is Perplexity’s AI search engine, which handled a staggering 780 million queries in May 2025 alone and is growing at over 20% month-over-month. Built on the Chromium platform, Comet supports Chrome extensions, making it easy for users to switch without losing their favorite tools.

Final Thoughts

Comet is more than just a new browser—it’s a glimpse into the future of how we’ll interact with the internet. By blending AI’s power with a user-friendly, conversational interface, Perplexity is creating a smarter, more integrated web experience that could change the way we work, learn, and explore online.

If you’re ready to move beyond tabs and search bars, Comet might just be the AI companion your browser has been missing.
